The following internet ratings by our customers are completely out of our control, and nonetheless demonstrate high standards at both hotels. The internet is a great leveller and no amount of good PR or marketing can influence our guests when they are writing reports on these websites about the hotels.

I am pleased to report good improvements in the hygiene of our kitchen areas at both hotels. Our environmental health consultant Nick Tilley has completed his latest round of inspections with the following results: WLP 07 64%; WLP 08 80%; BH 07 76%; BH 08 87%. The acceptable pass mark is 80% so this represents a good performance by Wayne Turner, Executive Chef and by Diego Granada, Head Chef.

Look out for yet more improvements to www.bealeshotels.co.uk. In particular, the history pages have been improved with a free interactive download of the history of Beales Ltd, “Minding our own Business” – written in 1972 by John Beale – a quite wonderful read, full of humour and wit, chronicling the ups and downs of this great family business through the generations.

Estates news

At BH, dozens of new TV channels are being installed giving guests around 70 choices. This is in addition to the recently fitted free broadband in all 53 bedrooms, and in addition to the planned fitting of air conditioning this summer into all 53 rooms. Negotiations over the price of the top floor are ongoing.

At WLP, new tables and chairs arrive this week for the Cedar Restaurant. A huge improvement and phase 1 of the refurbishment of the restaurant and bar, which will close for two months in January and February for a complete makeover. Amultitude of small improvements at WLP have been made recently, in addition to an extensive programme of exterior painting. Negotiations are ongoing over the WLP lease.

And finally…

Farewell to Safiya Health and Beauty rooms at WLP. In the end too many factors conspired against us making a success of this business. Sadly the turnover of staff was quite high, with a huge amount of training time and money invested in the staff here. Also Elemis were not interested in renewing the contract to supply the materials used in the beauty treatments, and the location high up in the hotel was always going to conspire against us.

However the good news is that this area is going to be converted into a beautiful air conditioned double bedroom, and rooms 7 and 8 on the same corridor will also be air conditioned at the same time.
